There aren’t many pre-cruise hotels where you can wake up, look out the window, and watch your ship arrive.
Before our 2025 Disney Magic cruise from Galveston, that’s exactly what we got.
We drove to Galveston the day before our cruise and stayed at Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21. We paid around $250 for the night, woke up with the ships right outside, ate breakfast at the hotel, and then parked close enough to the cruise terminal that we could simply grab our luggage and walk over.
Could we have skipped the hotel and driven to Galveston the morning of the cruise? Probably.
Would I do that next time? Nope.
Here’s exactly how I’d do a Galveston cruise again.

WHERE WE STAYED: HARBOR HOUSE AT PIER 21
We stayed at Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21 the night before our Disney Magic cruise.
The biggest selling point for me was the location.
From the hotel, we could actually watch the cruise ships come into Galveston. We saw the Disney Magic — our ship! — as well as a Carnival ship from the hotel.
There is something very fun about waking up on cruise morning and seeing the ship you’re about to board sitting right there.
But the location wasn’t just fun. It made the whole morning feel incredibly easy.
We paid around $250 for the night on our trip. Rates obviously vary depending on your dates, so I’d check the current price before deciding if it makes sense for your cruise.

THE ROOM — AND THAT VIEW
The hotel itself worked perfectly for what we needed: a comfortable place to stay the night before sailing without adding a bunch of extra logistics to the trip.
And again, the view was the star.
You’re not staying somewhere miles inland and waking up wondering what traffic looks like around the port. You’re already there, watching cruise morning happen outside your window.
Breakfast was also included during our stay, so we ate at the hotel that morning before heading to the terminal.
We didn’t need an elaborate pre-cruise itinerary. We had grabbed McDonald’s on our drive into Galveston the night before, settled into the hotel, and let the cruise be the main event.
That was plenty.
WHERE WE PARKED FOR THE CRUISE
This was another part of the trip I would absolutely repeat.
We used the official Port of Galveston parking.
We’ve used garages on previous trips, but this time we parked in one of the port lots close enough to the terminal that we could park, grab our luggage, and walk right over.
No waiting for a parking shuttle. No adding another transportation step. We parked and headed toward the ship.
For us, that convenience was worth it.
Because parking availability and options can vary by cruise terminal, I’d reserve parking ahead of time through the official Port of Galveston rather than assuming you’ll figure it out when you arrive.

COULD WE HAVE DRIVEN TO GALVESTON THE MORNING OF THE CRUISE?
Technically? Yes.
We live within driving distance of Galveston, so we probably could have left home early on embarkation day, driven straight to the port, parked, and boarded the ship.
That would have saved us roughly $250 on the hotel.
But I still wouldn’t do it.
When I’m taking a cruise, I prefer to arrive in the port city the day before. Traffic, car trouble, construction or any other random delay becomes a much bigger deal when there’s a ship leaving without you later that afternoon.
For me, the hotel night isn’t really about extending the vacation.
It’s buying a buffer.
And when that buffer also gives me breakfast, an easy cruise morning, and a view of the Disney Magic pulling into port? I’m keeping it.
WOULD I STAY AT HARBOR HOUSE AGAIN?
Absolutely.
This isn’t one of those trips where I’d tell you what I’d change next time.
I’d do essentially the same thing:
Drive to Galveston the day before. Stay at Harbor House. Spend one night. Wake up and watch the ships. Eat breakfast. Park through the Port of Galveston. Walk to the terminal.
I don’t think we needed two nights in Galveston before the cruise. One night was enough to give us the buffer I wanted without spending unnecessarily on another hotel night.
That’s the sweet spot for me.
ONE THING I WOULD DO BEFORE ANY CRUISE PORT
Research the port before you go.
We’ve cruised from multiple U.S. ports now, and they aren’t all the same. Parking, terminal locations, transportation and the best place to stay can change considerably from one departure port to another.
What worked beautifully for us in Galveston isn’t automatically the plan I’d use in Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale or Miami.
Which is exactly why I’m writing this series.
THE VACATION TAKE
What we did: Drove to Galveston one day early and stayed at Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21 before our Disney Magic cruise.
What we paid: About $250 for one night.
Best part: Watching the cruise ships — including our Disney Magic — from the hotel.
Parking: Official Port of Galveston parking close enough for us to walk to the terminal.
Would I stay there again? Absolutely.
Would I drive to Galveston the morning of the cruise to save the hotel cost? Probably not. I’ll spend the money for the night-before buffer.
What I’d do next time: Pretty much the exact same thing.
