After eight cruises across Disney, Norwegian, Carnival, and Royal Caribbean, I’ve learned a thing or two about what deserves space in my suitcase.
Of course, swimsuits, sunscreen, and flip-flops are essentials. But some of my favorite things to pack aren’t necessarily the first things you’d think of.
They’re the little things that keep our cabin organized, make traveling as a family easier, and add a little extra comfort to our vacation.
Here are eight things I always pack for a cruise—and why they’ve earned a permanent spot in my suitcase.
1. Magnetic Hooks: My Favorite Cruise Cabin Organization Hack
Cruise cabins aren’t exactly known for their extra storage space, especially when you’re traveling with family.
That’s why magnetic hooks are one of my favorite cruise essentials.
On compatible metal cabin walls, they’re perfect for hanging hats, beach bags, lightweight jackets, and even Disney ears!
Instead of piling everything on a chair or taking up valuable counter space, we can keep things organized and easy to grab.
Would I pack them again? Every single time.
My tip: Choose strong magnetic hooks, check your cruise line’s policies, and avoid hanging anything too heavy or damaging cabin surfaces.
2. A Foldable Laundry Hamper: The Real Game Changer
This might be one of the least exciting things I pack, but it’s also one of the most useful.
A foldable laundry hamper makes such a difference in keeping our cabin clean.
Instead of dirty clothes ending up on the floor, stuffed into suitcases, or scattered around the room, everything has a place.
It’s especially convenient on Disney cruises because Disney ships have self-service laundry facilities. When it’s time to wash clothes, they’re already together and ready to go.
And when the cruise is over? The hamper folds down for easy packing.
Would I pack it again? Absolutely. It’s a game changer for family cruising.
3. Reusable Straws: A Small Thing That Makes a Big Difference
If you don’t like the feeling of a paper straw after it’s been sitting in your drink for a while, you’ll understand this one.
Many cruise ships use paper or alternative straws. On Disney cruises, we’ve even encountered sugar-based straws!
I prefer bringing my own reusable straws so I don’t have to deal with one getting soggy halfway through a drink.
It’s such a small thing, but it makes those poolside drinks and vacation coffees a little more enjoyable.
Would I pack them again? Yes! Just remember to bring a way to clean them.
4. A Travel Fan: Better Airflow at Night
I always pack a small travel fan for our cruise cabin.
I personally like having air circulating while I sleep, and cruise cabins don’t always have the airflow I prefer.
A compact fan makes the room feel more comfortable at night.
It’s one of those little comforts from home that I appreciate having on vacation.
Would I pack it again? Absolutely. A travel fan has earned a permanent spot in my cruise luggage.
My tip: Check your cruise line’s current rules before packing a fan, since permitted models and electrical requirements can vary.
5. Packing Cubes: More Organized, Less Chaos
I don’t think I’ll ever go back to packing without packing cubes.
When we’re traveling as a family, I use them to organize everyone’s clothes, separate different types of clothing, and make unpacking in our cruise cabin so much easier.
Instead of digging through suitcases looking for one particular outfit, everything has its place.
And when we arrive, I can easily move the cubes into drawers or onto shelves.
Plus, whether it’s a mind trick or not, I swear they help me fit more into our suitcases!
Even if they don’t magically create extra space, they definitely make packing feel more efficient.
Would I pack them again? Without question. They’re useful for cruises, hotel stays, and pretty much every vacation we take.
6. A Travel Mug: Coffee, Poolside Drinks, and Everything Between
One thing I always bring on a cruise is an insulated travel mug.
I use mine for morning coffee, carrying drinks around the ship, and keeping beverages cold while we’re enjoying the pool deck.
I love being able to take my coffee with me instead of carrying around a small disposable cup.
And when we’re spending time outside in the sunshine, an insulated mug helps keep cold drinks cold longer.
It’s a simple item, but one I reach for throughout the entire cruise.
Would I pack it again? Every time. It’s useful from the first cup of coffee to an afternoon by the pool.
My tip: Follow your cruise line’s beverage station rules. Use the provided cups to transfer drinks into your mug rather than filling it directly from shared dispensers.
7. A Fish Extender: A Little Disney Cruise Magic

This one is specifically for Disney Cruise Line!
One of the fun traditions on Disney cruises is decorating your stateroom door and hanging a fish extender outside.
Some families join organized Fish Extender Gift Exchange groups, where participants exchange gifts with assigned staterooms.
Personally? I’ve chosen not to participate in those groups.
I love the idea, but I don’t love adding another commitment or deadline to my vacation.
What we do enjoy is pixie dusting!
Pixie dusting is when cruisers leave little surprise gifts for other staterooms, simply to spread a little Disney magic.
There’s no organized exchange or expectation of receiving anything in return.
We love surprising other families, and it’s always fun when we return to our stateroom and discover that someone has left a little magic for us, too.
A fish extender gives those surprises a place to go.
Would I pack it again? Absolutely! I love the fun of pixie dusting without the pressure of a formal gift exchange.
My take: You don’t have to participate in an organized Fish Extender Gift Exchange to enjoy this Disney cruise tradition. Do what makes your vacation fun!
8. Towel Clips: Keep Your Towel Where It Belongs
If you’ve ever tried relaxing on a cruise ship’s pool deck on a windy day, you know exactly why towel clips deserve a spot on this list.
Cruise ships can get surprisingly breezy, and there’s nothing more annoying than constantly adjusting your towel while you’re trying to relax.
Towel clips attach your towel to your lounge chair, keeping it in place even when the wind picks up.
They’re inexpensive, lightweight, and take up very little room in your suitcase.
Would I pack them again? Every single cruise. They’re one of those little things that make pool days so much easier.

What I’d Pack Again After 8 Cruises
After eight cruises, I’ve realized that the best cruise accessories aren’t necessarily the most expensive or the trendiest.
They’re the things that make our vacation easier.
My top two? Magnetic hooks and a foldable laundry hamper.
Both help keep a small cruise cabin organized, and both have earned their place on every packing list I make.
But honestly, all eight of these items have proven useful enough that I keep bringing them along.
Whether you’re planning your first cruise or your tenth, my advice is simple: pack the things that make your vacation more comfortable, organized, and enjoyable.
Less clutter, less hassle, and more time enjoying the vacation.
